A Good Coming Out/Coming of Age Story

Even though I would classify this as a Young Adult book, I think the feelings Kieran & Drew experience could benefit an older audience as well. Take the emotions out of the high school setting and I think anybody in a similar situation could relate.
The story is told through alternating the POV between Kieran & Drew though to me it seemed there was more Kieran. I liked the realness and natural progression of how their relationship developed. I also really like Matt, Drew's teammate and best friend, because he was supportive, but spoke his mind about feeling hurt and wasn't afraid to tell him off for being a jerk either. There were a few times where Kieran & Drew's HEA was in limbo, but by the end both boys realized what they wanted for their future.

Gem of A Story

This is a beautiful gem of a story about two high school boys, Kieran and Drew, who are coming to terms with their sexuality and finding strength in each other. They both have troubled homes, Drew especially struggles as the head of household to his agoraphobic mother, but they find each other when they most need it and find that they're soul mates. Kieran has loved the handsome, athletic Drew from afar for years now, but Drew just recently noticed the quirky, unassuming Kieran. Perhaps they're initially drawn together simply because they're both gay, but they find that they have everything in common and perfectly complement one another.
This book just continues along at a bit of a mellow pace, with a few blips here and there of conflict. But this is really a story of two boys who are coming out and falling in love and finding themselves at a time in life where nothing makes sense and so many decisions need to be made.
I'm a huge fan of L.A. Gilbert and loved her book The Coil. While this was a change of pace from that book, I loved it as well. It shows her versatility as an author and her ability to write beautiful stories, no matter the theme. Highly recommended.

A beautiful coming out story

The characters made this book a wonderful read. Keiran was so lonely and painfully isolated at school, ridiculed and viewed as a 'freak' because he was different to his peers. Drew, outwardly the popular baseball player, was dealing with the pressures of having to look after his agoraphobic mother. Both boys are finishing high school and planning their next steps. Drew is trapped in his home town, not able to leave his mother. Keiran, on the other hand, can't wait to escape and has plans to move as far away as possible.
Keiran and Drew commence a relationship which culminates in having to make decisions about their future. The story is slightly predictable, as Drew hides his sexuality and Keiran experiences problems with his father, but so well written.
I liked the slow build up of the sexual aspects of the relationship. Aged 18, Keiran is desperate for a physical relationship "If the small-town lifestyle wasn't enough to make him want to leave, then a desperate urge to have actual sex with another human being was." However, the sex between Keiran and Drew is entwined with the emotion, as they both slowly start to explore the physical side of their relationship. 4.5 stars
