About the Author
John Brown of Haddington (1722-1787) was the leading minister in the Associate Synod during the formative years of eighteenth-century Scotland. He was a devout Christian, a gifted preacher, and a prolific writer of theology. He began life in obscure poverty, without advantage of wealth, position, title, or education. Yet God favored him with unusual gifts and an enormous capacity for hard work. Brown taught himself Greek while working in the fields. He became a man of deep spiritual experience with skill in preaching the doctrines of free grace and piety. His last words, my Christ, summarize his life and thought.

Just a facsimile reprint of Haddington

First, this review is about the printing, and not the contents. The contents of the book are incredibly good - and I look forward to doing a deeper dive into it! This is why the review gets three stars. 5 stars for content, probably 2 stars for the printing.

The printing is awful. I didn't realize that this work is a facsimile of an original printing from 1817 (as the inside flap says - it is from "A Compendious View of Natural and Revealed Religion". A quick Google search will get you the original book since it is now public domain).

Even the modern introduction to the work has some bad printing - with horizontal lines across the page, and fuzzy text. Not a high quality print by any means. I am a bit disappointed - in my mind I had thought that RHB had gone to the effort of laying out the text digitally. My mistake.

I started reading this book on Wattpad and I was hooked after the first chapter. That's how good Lauren Jackson is! She's one of my favourite authors and this book is absolutely amazing!!! This book is the absolute must-read! The author does such a brilliant way of describing and writing the plot, it makes you feel as if you are there with them. When the chapters stopped being uploaded on Wattpad, it literally killed me not to know how it ends.
A thrilling novel, full of suspense, and a lot of laughter. Characters are so unique, and so is the book. In such a dark place, Lauren J. managed to find just the right balance between heavy moments, suspense and humour. You definitely won't regret reading this book!

Glock begins with an essay that traces Wittgenstein's career and the development of his thought, the influences of such people as Frege, Russell, and the members of the Vienna Circle, and ends with a statement of Wittgenstein's significance for 20th-century philosophy. For most terms contained in the dictionary, the discussion is fairly detailed, and Glock provides critical insight into each term. A useful dictionary

Hans-Johann Glock har written a useful dictionary. For everyone writing about Wittgenstein, this volume is helpful. If one wonder whether one's interpretation of LW is reasonable or not and want to check with a progressive scholar, the book is brilliant. Also, the dictionary is so thorough that it might teach you a lot about Wittgenstein. If you have questions concerning Wittgenstein's views on the autonomy of language, grammar, religion, rule-following, private language etc, you should get this book.

Best book on W out there

Excellent work. Along with D.F. Pears's "The False Mirror", this "dictionary" is as in-depth and wide-ranging as we could hope. I tested it by looking up "logical objects", a rather minor topic from the Tractatus but one on which Wittgenstein made definitive criticisms of Frege and Russell. The entry was thorough and clear, and I used it countless times while studying the Tractatus and PI. An excellent work for those already familiar with Wittgenstein, and for those wrestling with his ideas for the first time alike.

I haven't picked this volume up since I studied with David Pears over a decade ago. But, I did yesterday, when I needed it, and bingo! To my mind anyway, the best quick reference on Wittgenstein, whose thought, never easy to access, and less so to penetrate, is made both accessible and comprehensible to the non-technically trained general reader. Not to say that the book, which strives to be an exhaustive reference, is easy going, which is why students may want to supplement it which some sort of narrative. For a short comprehensive narrative overview, I recommend P.M.S. Hacker's awesome entry on Wittgenstein in the Blackwell Companion to Analytic Philosophy, a very handy volume in itself. For the longer view I recommend Hacker's Wittgenstein's Place in Twentieth Century Philosophy, his earlier, fantastic Illusion & Insight - the allusion here is to Wittgenstein's loadstar, rather categorical, admonition about how not deceiving oneself ought to be the purpose of philosophy. And anything by Pears, sort of the Pindar of Analytic Philosophy.
