Just go buy it

I originally purchased this book for a Poli Sci class and lost it sometime after the class. A few years later I desperately wanted to re-read certain portions ( turned out to be all of it ) and actually bought it again. While it's obviously a summarization of many political ideologies, the breadth of information is excellent.

I first read the book in POLSC 201: Intro to Political Theory. I found the book to be well written and easy to understand. I kept the book after the course was over and have since referred back to this book for many other classes. I recommend this book to all Liberal Arts and Social Science majors.

Arkebe Oqubay, Minister and Special Advisor to the Ethiopian Prime Minister

Dr Arkebe Oqubay is a minister and special advisor to the Ethiopian prime minister and has been at the centre of policymaking for 25 years. He is the former mayor of Addis Ababa and serves as board chair of leading public organizations. He holds a PhD in development studies from SOAS, University of London, and is research associate at the Centre of African Studies in the University of London. Dr Oqubay has been a member of the core leadership of TPLF and EPRDF, the movement that spearheaded the seventeen-year popular liberation struggle that ended the Derg military dictatorship.

“Made in Africa, Industrial Policy in Ethiopia” is an incredibly insightful book that takes the reader behind Ethiopia’s successful economic performance. It describes Ethiopia’s “spectacular leaps on multiple development fronts” and is written by Dr. Arkebe Oqubay, who has had a front row seat in the development of the policies that led to the growth.

What were the factors that make this possible? Is this growth trajectory a short term phenomena or will it really help counties like Ethiopia to catch up? Do we know yet? The book makes a completing case that contrary to common believe, industrial policy can work in Africa.
Throughout the book, one can learn that Ethiopia has exploited its available policy space, and has consistently followed its own development path. In many ways, its development path has been unique in Africa, diverging from the normal prescriptions of international financial institutions. I particularly liked the policy independence theory; A sovereign right to make a mistake and learn from it! How enchanting.

Dr. Oqubay is not shy about discussing the serious developmental and existential issues facing Ethiopia. The book is anecdote and data rich, a page turner and anyone who is serious about growth and policy making in Africa must read it. I would especially encourage scholars, students, Africans and global business leaders with interest in Africa to make it a priority read.

I just read this book, Made in Africa, ...

I just read this book, Made in Africa, Industrial Policy in Ethiopia, and was pleasantly surprised. A sitting Minister in Africa writing such a scholarly and compelling book about the direction of his country was not something I expected. Throughout the book, one can learn that Ethiopia has exploited its available policy space, and has consistently followed its own development path. In many ways, its development path has been unique in Africa, diverging from the normal prescriptions of international financial institutions.

It reminded me of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ushering in a new era of hope and progress in 1933 when he proposed the New Deal based on the assumption that the power of the federal government was needed to get the country out of the depression. At the time, his proposal was considered radical. But he once said, “…this country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take an idea and try it, and it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” Dr. Oqubay’s Made in Africa is making the same case but in the African context.

The book treats one of an interesting and timely issue within the context of Africa political economy. It has a very concise and crispy theoretical foundation with a vast empirical analysis dealing on the three main sectors, namely leather, cement and cut-flower in Ethiopia. The book is a highly recommended book for both academics and policy quarters and it can serve as reference material for those who are interested on Africa political economy as well.
