About the Author

Jean D. M. Underwood is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Nottingham Trent University, UK. She has published extensively on the effects of technology identifying the cognitive and social factors that facilitate and inhibit effective learning with and through digital technologies. She is the co-editor of several books, including Learning Through Digital Technologies (2007) and Integrated Learning Systems: Potential into Practice (1997).

Lee Farrington-Flint is Lecturer in Developmental Psychology at the Centre for Research in Education & Educational Technology at The Open University, UK.  He has published on the topic of early language and literacy skills and early arithmetic development, and the role of digital technology on children’s communication and learning.    His work has appeared in the Journal of Research in Reading, British Journal of Developmental Psychology, and Educational Psychology, among other top journals.

What a fun way to learn about the colonies! Clearly a lot of heart and soul went into creating this book, and the result is an engaging, kid-friendly guide to an important time in our country's history. I love all of the different approaches to sharing such a wide range of topics. I can't wait to see what these kids come up with next!

If you like or love this series it is worth the money to read

I'm a huge James Patterson fan in general, but not a graphic novel woman usually. My husband picked this up for me for Christmas and I was not terribly impressed when I first saw it. However, I love the Daniel X series and this was a new one. Once I opened it I was enthralled. It's well written, as is everything Mr. Patterson does and the graphic pictures are fantastic. I hope he does several more of these.

Good Introduction to Daniel X

James Patterson has exploded into the YA market over the last few years. The thing I noticed, though, is that all of his YA books have secondary authors. This time it is Leopoldo Gout. This pair of writers put together a pretty good story.

The back story is this: Daniel X is a humanoid alien whose race is dedicated to hunting down and killing evil aliens. Daniel's parents were killed by one when he was younger. One who was at the top of a list of the most dangerous aliens on Earth. Daniel escaped and later returned to find the list. Now he is dedicated to hunting down all the aliens on the list, setting as his ultimate goal, killing the alien who killed his parents.

Daniel has some cool powers. He can shape change. He can create real objects with the power of his mind. This includes people. It is kind of weird.

In this story Daniel is hunting down "Number Six." To do so, Daniel decides to make contact with and befriend Number Six's son. Weirdly enough, the son looks human. The father does not. The son is willing to help as he dislikes what his father is doing: setting up alien hunts here on Earth, with not a care for the collateral damage this causes.

The story is action packed, but not to the point of mindlessness. It is not simplistic. There are a good many twists and turns. One thing I really enjoy in a story is for it to surprise me. This one managed to do that several times.

It is billed as a Young Adult series. I think that is more than fair. As an adult there are still some plot holes that I fall through that would not have bothered me as a younger reader.

If you like YA, science fiction that borders at times on fantasy, and graphic novels (especially when all three are wrapped into one package) give this a try. It is a good way to introduce yourself to Daniel X.

Pedestrian writing bolstered by beautiful artwork

There isn't much to say for the story. It's enjoyable enough. It hits all the marks in this story about an alien boy who can crate reality whole cloth and needs to deal with all the aliens who are out to kill him. Apparently this is just one book in a series of books that James Patterson lent his name to (with others doing the actual writing) and it has some decent qualities. However, most of the writing is fairly pedestrian. YOu get a lot of cliches that sound like teenagers coming up with dialogue that would be "cool" instead of believable. The fact that all of Daniel's best friends have been created from his mind has a lot of potential for angst and exploration of loneliness. This potential is squandered.

However, if you don't expect much, you don't need to get too hung up on the silliness. ANd the art is beautiful so there's that.

Wonderfully Simple, Yet Highly Effective!

In the last three years I've amassed a large volume of books and lecture notes on the craft of storyboarding and story-telling. All of them are incredibly informative and effective in their own way. And then I ordered and read Iggy's Incredibly Easy Way to Write a Story...

My first thought was, "Good grief! When does Mr. Glebas find all this time to write--he'd just recently released the Animator's Eye ( another great book )." But to my amazement the book was every bit is powerful as his previous books, but it is vastly different.

When Glebas says, "Incredibly Easy", he's not kidding. Don't misunderstand me, this isn't a step by step method book wherein you plug in ideas and spit out ready made stories. It is, however, a very simplified way of viewing and building your story in a way that allows you to literally "see" the logical ebb and flow of your story immediately. The biggest hurdle to up and coming story artists is that we often times get lost in the weeds when developing our stories and character arcs. This leads to a lot of useless drawings and time spent digging our way out of weak premises and lackluster stories.

Glebas' method reminds me of a fine gesture drawing. Like a gesture it articulates the feeling, structure and story of the pose in a quick, clear way without the artifice of a bunch of extra squiggly lines. In fact, the "Visual" portion of the book that depicts the structure is conveyed literally like a gesture drawing.

The structure of the book itself is built in two halves. The first is a story, much like a storybook, featuring Iggy and Scared Bunny as the protagonists. The story is quick but complete from exposition, insighting moment, fun & games, false victory, dark night of the soul moment and so on...( I say it matter-of-factly because Glebas made the turns in the story so simply it appeared effortless in the telling). The second portion of the book breaks down why it appears so simple. In this half there are a series of drawings that look like the spine of a dragon that we follow from tail to head. This gives us the ability to see the peaks and valleys of the story readily, as well as many other story-telling elements that you'll see when you purchase the book.

What makes the book so valuable and important is that it speaks to visual story-tellers in a visual way. Most every other book on story-telling is written with the potential reader being a story-teller with words. It's so logical to approach artists this way, it makes you wonder why someone hadn't thought of it sooner. Thankfully, Glebas was the one to do it. He's a gifted story-teller and an equally gifted teacher. When you couple that with the inexpensive price of the book, you get the silver-bullet of story-telling instructionals. It's a must have for any aspiring story artist.

Wasn't sure at first - then 'got it' by the end

Okay, the first half of this book had me wondering. It had gotten such rave reviews that I wondered if I missed something. That said, for anyone who begins to read this book - read through the story - and then continue. It'll all make sense in the end and you will end up learning something you likely didn't know - or had forgotten. It does teach in a visual way, which has cemented some things for me.

I did have to laugh thinking that I once read through McKee's "Story" - do you know how many pages are in that book! And yet this one says the same thing - in about 1% of the the page count.

I finally get it!

I went to college for Animation and took many classes on story writing and story boarding but I always struggled with my own stories. I either had too many ideas and didn't know how to organize them or nothing at all with horrible writer's block. This book is AMAZING! If you're a visual person like me then this is the ONLY way to approach creative writing. Thank you Francis Glebas for your book!

How to Be a Man in All Stages of Life

Back when I was a teenager living with my parents, there was an old paperback from the 70's called Passages gathering dust on one of the bookshelves. I browsed through it once or twice, and while I couldn't really relate to most of the stuff, I did think it was neat how it laid out a road map for how men and women change in their personalities and goals as they age. Well now, Rollo Tomassi has taken this one step further, and written the definitive life-stage guide for a masculine man living in a feminized 21st century world.

Let me be clear: this book is BETTER than the original Rational Male. The first one was a great book in its own right and maybe had more important fundamental concepts but it had no clear organizational structure and read more like a series of loosely related blog posts. This one knows where it is going.

The book focuses on the life stages of women and how they go from being crazy for hawt guys but somewhat unaware of their power in their teen years to the party years of the 20's to the panic that sets in around 30 to the epiphany where they rationalize that they finally realize how much they appreciate the comfort and provider aspects of men. Although the focus is on women, men are included indirectly since many of their decisions are based of optimization of intimate encounters with said women. The later chapters do, in fact, go into greater detail about how men should respond to all of this in their outlook and important decisions.

I interact with girls/women of all ages from teen through college coed through bitter 30's-40's as a result of a variety of social hobbies and Tomassi's descriptions seem pretty accurate. No matter what your stage in life, you can benefit by knowing women's "angle" and not falling into their frame and thereby making decisions that will continue to haunt you down the road.

To sum this book up, it made me recall an experience from a couple years back. I was in my hometown for Christmas and paid a visit to an old high school friend at his law firm. He married a tall stunning blonde southern belle right out of college, has a high-paying attorney job, is in the process of building a big new house in the right neighborhood, and has two bright young sons. Meanwhile, I was invisible to desirable women through college and all my 20's. I have an ok job but not particularly lucrative or prestigious, and I fill a lot of my time with reading, team sports, and other hobbies to fill the lack of a family life. Strangely enough, though, there was a slight tinge of regret in my friend's voice as he told me that he envied my freedom. At the time, I thought he was just being nice so as to not draw attention to our relative social status, but after reading this book, I realize he was probably serious. It's not that he doesn't love his family and success but it is all he has ever known. The wife will continue to make demands on his time and energy and even in a best case scenario, she will never be as sexy or amorous as she was at 22. Meanwhile, while some aspects of my life have, frankly, sucked so far (especially when it comes to women) they are likely to improve a great deal, and I now have this book to thank in part for that.

It feels pretty &*%$ to be defeated, doesn’t it? In the war of the sexes, the generation of our fathers has been completely decimated. It wasn’t even a contest. Women control western society: its memes, conventions and subconscious beliefs, they write the rules. You’ll find this work, from an average perspective, pretty anti-female. The line that got me was: “womb-en”. I stared at this for awhile, thinking "is this a typo?”. To be sure, Rollo Tomassi is representing the Male end of the argument from a position of intellectual superiority and even anger. So many men have been burned through our situation, on such a large scale, causing such incredible unhappiness and suffering, that his anger is justified.

Realise that the picture given to modern men, the blueprint of how to live your life, is like taking the most ideological, popular, boring ride at an amusement park. Your close loved ones, guardians, police, teachers, everyone you ever looked up to all take this ride and ask you in various direct and indirect ways to please get on the ride and come with us. If you are a woman, a minor or a farm animal the impetus to take any other route would be hard to find. It is a sad day indeed when the opportunity for a true Alpha to go his own way is missed, and he elects to take that boring, repetitive, backwards, corrupt *&^%ing ride. This world is an open book, you can write anything you want in your masterpiece. Are you gonna tell me you just want to neatly and meekly copy the chapters of everyone around you?

Rollo Tomassi is a bright man. He understands and sees through the house of mirrors. He is a true red blooded Alpha. As a dedicated blog follower I take this opportunity to send some spare change his way. His writing helps sooth the wounds inflicted by human nature and cultural dogma. His recent post on female indignation, for example, has had me noticing this feminine pattern everywhere within the women in my life. In this way his teachings give me new tools to fight back. Suddenly I find new awareness, power though knowledge, and the now naked truth seems almost dully obvious. Through the freedom of the internet and at no ongoing costs I am gifted with Tomassi’s influence in my life. Thanks Bro.

Excellent points marred by convoluted sentences and verbosity.

This is the second book I've read from Tomassi and it's the second time I've encountered the same frustration: reading it is a pain in the ass. Let me explain. Tomassi makes great points, so the content of the book is sound and excellent. What lets it down is the way it's expressed: convoluted sentences with too many adjectives and adverbs that unnecessarily burry the point he's trying to make. He says something with 100 words that could be said in 10, often repeating himself over and over. This really distracts from the points he makes.

I'd naturally blame the editor, but the editor can only do so much. Tomassi needs to improve (by simplifying and avoiding verbosity) his writing.
