High quality material, low quality content.

The binding a paper used in this book are very nice and heavy. The illustration on the other hand, leave something to be desired. They are cheap cgi. The chimera is just different pictures of animals hastily slapped together in a program and stuck on the page. Some may like the cgi, but I find it looks like it came out of a bad arcade game from 10 years ago. If you want to learn some things about mythological creatures, you can do this with this book. If you are looking for an illustrated guide to mythology and might be interested in using some of the images in and art project, find it somewhere else.

An excellent reference for creatures of myth, legend, and folklore

I was very excited to receive my copy of An Illustrated Guide to Mythical Creatures... and I was not disappointed. This concise book is full of wonderful images and informative text about creatures from myth, legend, and folklore from all over the world.

The illustrations presented in this book are what really stand out for me. David West has created beautifully detailed 3-D computer generated images. Each page is filled with CG images depicting creatures from myth and legend and the heroes that fought them. The 3-D graphics are put to especially good use in creating the chimera, creatures with body parts from various animals. In addition to the CG images are examples of more traditional art such as classic paintings, wood prints, sculpture, and temple murals depicting creatures of myth throughout history.

The information in this book gives the reader a good base of knowledge for creatures of myth, legend, and folklore. Not only are there several different types of creatures mentioned; but, there are specific examples and the country from where the legend originated. I'll give you one little teaser that I found very interesting: The Hsigo, a winged monkey from Chinese folklore, serves to warn of coming drought. Sound familiar? This legend may have inspired the flying monkeys from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In this guide, there are mythical creatures based upon legends from all over the world. Native American, Hebrew, Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, Hindu, Japanese, English, South American, Australian, African, and Russian, to name a few.

This is the perfect place to start your adventure in reading myths, legends, and folklore. With the specific legends and regions that they come from listed in the book, readers will refer to this guide again and again as they read other books about these mythical creatures. This a perfect book for kids who are interested in monsters and fantasy. Adults can also appreciate the illustration and information as much as I did.

Best quality: The combination of computer generated images and the historical art from each country.
Worst: I was left wanting more. It would be great to see companion editions. Maybe a guide to each countries myths, legends, and folklore. Now that would be exciting!!

Not up to date, but very good.

As far as I can tell, this book has not been updated since the publication of the 15th edition in 1960. Nevertheless, although it is not up to date I would not call it "outdated," since it provides a snapshot the philosophical concerns of its day. In this respect, it is especially helpful when one is reading anglo-american philosophy of the early twentieth-century. It is also quite good, in my opinion, in terms of achieving the appropriate balance of breadth and depth for a philosophical dictionary.

This work contains some interesting information, and can be used as a source in researching particular topics. But it , in my opinion, was never really comprehensive enough. And having had its most recent edition close to fifty years ago is not up-to- date.

Really good disaster medicine book

Really good disaster medicine book. I prefer this one to the others out there, but it needs to be supplemented with PDR Guide to Terrorism, Response to Mass Weapons, and some of the military books on disaster and tactical medicine, if you are interested in passing the test for the Board Certification in Disaster Medicine. Any Disaster Medicine Specialist should read this or at least read some of the books and articles written by the authors and contributing authors.

Capture's so bravely the human quest- for the meaning of life.

Donald Wells', whimsical tone in these varied works, titled; `Sex Poems For Virgins' was a refreshing read that kept me hooked. I felt like a spectator on a soul journey throughout the different stages of a man's life.

I enjoyed his unique style. He questions existence with such raw emotion in the simple pleasures of life, from adolescence and beyond. It's not all light-hearted and whimsical, as you read toward the end segments of the book. His writings change some-what, and become more metaphysical in style. The latter years of growth, bring a deeper search of the self with how people change on the subject of sex, love, life, death, having, loosing, confusion; as well as all the natural ailments that can happen to a man in a course of a life. However, it left me feeling encouraged all the same, by the essence of love. This is a man who bares a beautiful soul, I felt I could relate with.

Also, the segments on marriage are to be envied. I felt I had come to know the author better, in the way he'd managed to capture so bravely the human quest for the meaning of life. There are many passages and segments in this book I feel I will want to keep close, re-read, and reflect upon. I look forward to reading more from this author and highly recommend this read. Don't let the title fool you. By the end of the read, you might understand why he chose it.

About the Author
D.S. Malik is a Professor of Mathematics and the first recipient and current holder of The Frederick H. and Anna K. Scheerer Endowed Chair in Mathematics at Creighton University. Dr. Malik received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1985 and has published more than 50 papers and 18 books on abstract algebra, applied mathematics, graph theory, fuzzy automata theory and languages, fuzzy logic and its applications, programming, data structures, and discrete mathematics.

This book is horrible

If you wish to learn Java, this is not the way. This textbook presents the material in a convoluted manner, taking the reader from subject to subject with the all the grace of a prisoner being forced between barracks. Examples are vague and difficult to understand, which works wondrously against the book's objective of teaching Java. I highly recommend this book to masochists and insomniacs, those who either enjoy pain or have trouble getting to sleep at night.

A more-than-adequate substitute to Malik is the Head-First Java textbook by Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra. This introductory book is easy to read without sacrificing material, and will have you coding in no time. Not only is Head-First infinitely superior to the Malik text, it is nearly fifty dollars cheaper. The choice is clear.

First edition is horrendous

Hello!

I own the first edition of this book, and it is the worst nonfiction book I have ever read.

For what it's worth, I consider myself an experienced (but not yet expert) programmer. I own several books on the C/C++ language, Windows API and VxD, assembly language, and computer science in general. This is the only book on Java I own, and it will be replaced soon!

If you are learning Java as your first language, or are not yet very comfortable programming, I strongly recommend you find another book. If you are attending a class for which this book is required, my condolences.

Another reviewer of this book mentioned something about lazy Wonder Years watchers - many students have problems learning their first programming language (especially if they're not comp sci or math majors), this does not mean you are lazy, you probably just need better instruction and more practice! I definitely would not want to learn my first language from this book. Don't be discouraged, I promise it'll make more sense as you go along!

This guy is unbelievable, beginner book my ass, he starts off with basic, basic crap then starts techno blah, blah, blah, is there a road to recovery for this technocrat who can't teach to the rest of us working on our first programming language, just would like to meet the person who picked this for a beggining java course, found more helpful explainations on the web!
