Great calendar with hunky men for 2015

Every year at this time I go on my search for my calendar of choice for the upcoming year. I found many great options here on Amazon and then realized upon closer inspection that many lacked the normal info on each calendar month. They only listed the days without listing holidays and more importantly having a small square of the previous and upcoming month. I was so glad I realized this and then I luckily found this Guys calendar. Often a calendar can be a disappointment when seen in person but not this one. 12 hunky guys of all varieties in seductive poses shot to definitely show them all at their best. These are not just magazine type shots but true professional quality photos done with impeccable lighting that are truly meant to be seen in large calendar size. The calendar is printed on high grade paper and also has a page showing October to December 2014 so the calendar can be put to use way before 2015. This calendar was printed in the UK. Everything is English but under each month and day each is also typed in 4 other languages. Not sure what they are but this calendar is recommended for not only English speaking people. If you enlarge the picture of the back of the calendar above you will see what I mean.

So I've found my 2015 calendar and couldn't be happier. If you are looking for a calendar with attractive men to help you get through the year this one I highly recommend. Great quality and a great purchase!

About the Author
Ron Hitchens is a California based computer consultant and educator whose career dates back to the disco era. His first exposure to computers was operating mainframes in the Air Force. His first programming language was COBOL, learned from a friend's borrowed textbook. Since that time Ron has used just about every computer system and programming language you can imagine: from 6502 assembler to XSLT. Ron spent much of the 1980s at the University of Texas at Austin, as student and staffer, where he burrowed deep into the Unix kernel and assisted with many interesting research projects. Ron spent the next several years doing kernel work for clients such as IBM and Unisys. Ron has also developed and taught professional development courses for the same clientele. Following a brief flirtation with C++, Ron fell in love with Java and has spent the last several years employing server-side Java technologies to build Web applications for clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Ron is Founder and President of Ronsoft Technologies (www.ronsoft.com). Ron lives in California with his wife and co-pilot, Karen, and a dog named Boomer. When Ron isn't working ( hah! ) he and Karen enjoy snorkeling, bicycling and walking the dog.

Good introduction to NIO (and regular exprs??), lacks depth

The book is useful to get started on nio, but you may overgrow it after a week:
it does not delve deeply into the matter. Particularly missing are:
- Mapped byte buffer uses
- Interactions between java & else using mapped files
- OS/platform idiosyncrasies (limits etc)
- Performance analysis
Finally, be aware that half of the book is devoted to regular expressions. The conflagration of nio and regexps is rather strange. I would rather have a shorter book with just a little more depth.

OK for beginners

I bought this book because of the lack of material on java.nio.
The book is a good introduction to java.nio but that is the extent of it. Half the book is an api reference and regular expressions (why is this even covered in this book?).
The rest tells you a little bit about the API, but not how to use it. There are examples, but you have to download them from the internet (ie no CD with the book).
The best chapter you can download for free anyway, so don't bother buying the book. Just download the free chapter and the free examples. The material on the internet from this book covers 90% of what you need to know.

A very good summary and explanation of the New I/O in Java

At only six chapters and 282 pages (including the index) one might think "Java NIO" (short for "New I/O") is little more than a cursory examination of the NIO packages introduced in J2SE 1.4 as a response to the Java Specification Request (JSR) #51. Yet, despite its relatively compact size, Mr. Hichens has done a very good job of introducing and explaining the many aspects of this New I/O. The book even includes parts of JSR 51 that are only tangentially related to I/O, such as the new regular expression processing found in java.util.regex and the new pluggable character set mappings.

Chapter 1 is a primer on general I/O concepts and mechanisms and provides a useful foundation for the following information. Beginning with the basics as a foundation is a strategy that Mr. Hichens uses in each of the subjects in the following chapters. It's an important first step, often omitted in books more interested in prose than instruction.

Chapter 2 is a thorough explanation of the various Buffer classes. As the means for data accumulation and manipulation, Buffers are a natural first step in explaining the NIO package. It begins with a fairly detailed basic description followed with sections labeled: Creating, Accessing, Filling, Flipping, Draining, Compacting, Marking, Comparing, Bulk Moves, Duplicating, etc. Each section provides simple yet useful examples of the various operations along with some helpful hints and warnings of potential pitfalls.

Chapter 3 adds about all you'd want to know about the channels used to convey the data into and out of buffer. As the book explains, Channels "are not an extension or enhancement, but a new, first-class Java I/O paradigm. ... A Channel is a conduit that transports data efficiently between byte buffers and the entity on the other end of the channel (usually a file or socket)." In the ensuing sections: Scatter/Gather, File Channels, Memory-Mapped Files, Socket Channels, Pipes and The Channel Utility Classes, the use of channels within the NIO paradigm are extensively explained.

Chapter 4 covers Selectors. Selectors add another completely new ability to Java 1.4. With selectors Java now has a much more sophisticated and integrated ability to do asynchronous and multiplexed I/O. This is obviously very important to anyone dealing with real-time and/or high-demand I/O and it is one of the main reasons for JSR 51.

The book does a very good job of explaining the concept and use of Selectors in chapter sections entitled: The Selection Process, Stopping the Selection Process, Managing Selection Keys, Concurrency, Asynchronous Closability and Selection Scaling.

Chapter 5 introduces Regular Expressions and explains the use of the new java.util.regex package. Regular expression processing was part of the JSR 51 and thus part of this book. While not strictly I/O related, as anyone familiar with Perl can attest, regular expression processing is very useful when it comes to manipulating any textual data used in I/O.

While it covers the Java Regular Expression API very well, it is not comprehensive enough to include the many intricacies of regular expressions. Of course O'Reilly has that covered in Jeffrey Friedl's book, "Mastering Regular Expressions."

The last chapter, Chapter 6, "Character Sets", is a pretty close examination of the actual data moved in I/O and demonstrates how Java 1.4 represents it in the class Charset.

If you've ever wondered about character sets and how they are involved in character encoding or how one character set might be compared with or encoded into another, this chapter will go a long way toward filling you in.

The book concludes with three appendices:

* NIO and the JNI - A more detailed explanation of a new Java ability to use system memory allocated with native (JNI) code. This is one way they managed to improve the performance of Java real-time 3D applications so dramatically.

* Selectable Channels Service Provider Interface (SPI) - Basically explains why this API is beyond the scope of the book and why it wouldn't be useful to anyone not programming a JVM or high-performance App server.

* NIO Quick Reference - Just as the name implies.

In summation, the concepts range from basic to advanced yet are presented in such a way that, even while being explained, the information is understandable and can be used for future reference purposes. Not for beginers.

This book loses 1 star just by not having a hyper linked table of contents. You have to page through the book to get to the recipe that you want.

The author makes a good sell on just why commercial soaps are harmful to you and the environment. Then she completely misses explaining the benefits of various ingredients such as teatree oil (antiviral, antibiotic and antifungal). I know that different oils have different benefits from other books about natural cosmetics. Sarah Brooks doesn't mention any of them.

Some of the terms she uses in recipes are never explained "Stir continuously until you get medium trace." ???? But, she explains how to zero out a scale just about every time something gets measured.

She also tells you to prepare your mold by lining it with freezer paper. This step is mentioned in the section on necessary equipment, and is never explained again. She never mentions what preparation would be needed if you wanted to use an mold for individual bars of soap instead of cutting apart a slab.

This book has wrong and misleading information with incomplete directions. It is definitely not for beginners. It appears the author did a little Internet research on soap making and decided to write a book on the subject. I have my doubts as to whether the author has even made a bar soap.

Fantastic book

This book has the basic steps on how to process soap. Soap making is a fun filled activity that anyone can enjoy. The sense of accomplishment in producing something that is useful in everyday life can build one’s self confidence and self esteem. I like the compilation of recipes in regards to soap making and the talented author that shared this awesome book!

A shame it isn't better known

My first trip to England in the early 70's was the highpoint of my theater-going experiences. I was lucky enough to see Alec Guiness in "Voyage Round My Father," the Peter Brook production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and a young Ian McClellan playing the lead in "Kean." All were unforgettable, but this play still sticks in my mind as being among the negelected masterpieces of 20th century playwrighting. Sartre understood theater history and he understood role-playing, appearance vs. reality and all the other critical saws that are discussed in high-school English classes. Yet in this play these tired themes are perfectly expressed and therefor renewed and made infinitely interesting by the manner in which the playwright unfolds them. There is a gradual peeling away of pretense and bravado on the part of the protagonist (the play might as well be a monologue), and the audience comes to understand that behind all the masks, what Sartre finally wants to show us is humanity stripped of its skin. He exposes the viscera, the protruding bones, the raw psychic flesh that we are all heir to. Kean, by play's conclusion, has degenerated into a knd of erstwhile Truman Capote, having sacrificed his soul in the process of gaining notoriety. He also shares Capote's substance abuse weaknesses, though his alcoholism is merely a symptom of his inner malaise. Sartre is saying a great deal about art, about the effect of fame and about the human condition in this work. It is a play that should be revived every fifth year either on the West End or on Broadway, in my opinion. It is apparently hard to come by. I can't even swear that it reads as well as it plays (I've seen two productions, but haven't been able to find it in print myself). If you ever have the opportunity to see the play, by all means avail yourself of a rare theatrical treat.

Brilliant and seemingly forgotten...

I, too, have only ever seen this produced, and never found it in print... but it's just brilliant. And FUNNY. How do you build a farce around the idea that "bad faith makes the world go 'round?" Well, Sartre manages it... I'll stop before this turns into an essay, and just recommend that anyone who has a chance to see this performed by a cast of any distinction at all should jump at it.

It is just hilariously funny and it actually makes you laugh out loud

On a recent trip to Christchurch for a wedding I had the luck to visit the new premises of Smiths Bookshop a historic store that had lost much of its inventory after the earthquakes of 2011.

I am always on the lookout for works by Sartre and came across a 1954 translation by Kitty Black of this work and for only $9.00.

Having just completed this I have found the work to be extremely engaging and I just keep going back to Act V especially the closing. It is just hilariously funny and it actually makes you laugh out loud. Sartre captures so much in this play, I would especially like to experience this acted out by a great actor. Just imagine George Clooney as Kean! Alas Robin Williams would have been also interesting. Who could do this, and who would play Anna Danby, for her lines at the end and Solomon are just so funny!

Read it!

It deserves 5 stars.

PS I had just spent the last few weeks/months reading the Roads to Freedom Trilogy and to read Kean was so refreshing. I have come to see there is a lot is Sartre's oeuvre that is still highly relevant today.

Also read his screenplay In the Mesh though this is a different genre
