Absolutely LOVE this book. I love the old hymns, and reading about the history of each one is so interesting. Read it every night berfore going to bed and sometimes it's hard to put down.

Go beyond praise and worship

When I first became a Christian about 8 years ago, I somehow got the idea that praise and worship music was the truly "spiritual music" - hymns were old-fashioned, and people who enjoyed them did so because they were hide-bound by tradition. If you're thinking this now, please listen to me.
A year or so ago I heard about well-known and respected Christians like John MacArthur and Joni Eareckson Tada talk about how the old hymns were so meaningful to them and really strengthened their faith. That got me thinking: so it's not just stodgy old 80-year olds who love those old hymns. Maybe there's something to them after all.
So I got this book. And I have been so blessed by it. God has shown me that true worship is so much more than just a feeling. He wants all parts of me - my body, my soul, and my spirit - to be involved in worship. So many in churches today are satisfied with getting only their spirits involved; some want their body involved too (lifting hands, etc.); but the truly mature (I am coming to believe) also get their souls (or minds) involved. Your mind doesn't get involved when you just repeat "Isn't He" fifty times; it does when you sing (and really think about) the wonderful words to songs like "O, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" or "Blessed Assurance."
Both these songs and many, many more are covered in this book. Get it, sing the songs, think about what Christ has done for you, think about the circumstances of their writing. And take your worship to another level.

Interesting, but how accurate?

This is an interesting book and may be rewarding for narratives about popular hymns, but there are errors in Dr. Osbeck' account of F. W. Faber's Faith of our Fathers (pp. 71 - 73), which make me suspicious of some of his other entries. The Oxford Movement was about considerably more than "better liturgical and ceremonial church services." The Movement's primary concerns were about establishing a Church identity apart from the State and research into early Christian belief and practice. High Church ceremonial, a relative term at best, was but one aspect, and one not shared by all members. Secondly, the "Fathers," capitalized in text as well as title, to which the hymn refers are not "many [Roman Catholic] leaders who were martyred during the reign of Henry VIII," but to Jesuit missionaries persecuted during the time of Elizabeth I. With all respect to Dr. Osbeck, I hope that this is the only example of a poorly researched and inaccurate entry.

Run don't walk away from the advice in this terrible book!

The title of this book is misleading. This is not a book about genuine natural cures and treating the causes of disease. It is actually a book written by a (probably very nice) pharmacist and aimed at people that are still big believers in taking multiple drugs to treat medical conditions or even high cholesterol but who would also like to maybe dip one of their toes...in a tiny way...into the world of basic nutritional supplements at very low doses.

The information in this book is very similar to what is repeated in the 'mind and body' sections of newspapers and online in so many superficial and ill-informed health websites. It is all stuff you have heard before and not in the least a challenging of the status quo. It's pointless and also harmful because of all the good information and research it omits.

Much of the information in the book is also not just outdated but incorrect. Anyone that has read even a few good quality books on orthomolecular medicine and nutrition by real experts in these fields will find an eyebrow raising 'fact' every page or two of this book.

A few examples:

It is recommended in this book that tofu and margarine be eaten to help reduce cholesterol levels and to improve health.

The saturated fat = heart disease myths are repeated in this book, egg white omelettes and throwing away egg yolks is recommended (always a sign of a lack of the most basic nutritional knowledge), and it recommends statin drug to lower (evil, evil) cholesterol with no warning given at all to take CoQ10 or other nutrients with them at least, to lower the risk of serious side effects.

As books like 'The Whole Soy Story' have explained, soy should be eaten only in the traditionally fermented forms (tempeh, natto, miso) and only in very small amounts, if at all. The facts on soy are shocking. Not only are the many health claims made about soy extremely dubious, there are many serious concerns about its safety as a food. Soy is hardly the health food it is promoted to be by the soy industry and in the highly processed form it is almost always eaten in, it is not very 'natural' either, and should not be considered a 'whole food.'

For fact-based information on saturated fat and cholesterol and why they are both good for you check out books like 'The Great Cholesterol Con' and ''The Cholesterol Myths' and 'Know Your Fats' by lipid expert Mary Enig PhD, and so on.

This book recommends only 1000 IU of vitamin D daily even for people with MS. This is not even close to an amount useful for an average person let alone an MS patient who may need 5 to 10 times this amount or more. This book also nowhere recommends getting vitamin D levels tested, which is so essential in MS and also for anyone battling serious disease. Just taking a tiny 1000 IU of vitamin D a day is unlikely to benefit anyone at all. This is bad advice.

B vitamins are recommended in tiny amounts such as just 20 mg a day. This is just nowhere near enough for many people.

This book recommends fluoride tablets for dental health. It also lists foods such as brown rice/pasta and multigrain bread as good choices for weight loss because they are low GI. The fact that once these foods are eaten they have the exact same effect on blood sugar etc. as eating pure sugar is ignored. People with hypoglycemia are recommended to eat lots of grains and to avoid healthy fats such as in meats and eggs. A diet with fat as a percentage of daily calories as low as 20% is recommended as ideal, despite the fact this is nowhere near high enough and would give far too much carbohydrate for many people to cope with, let alone someone that is overweight or hypoglycemic!

People with PCOS are reccommended to eat a low meat and fat diet and lots of 'healthy' whole grains. But eating a high carb diet makes the hyperinsulinism of PCOS so much worse and it can be controlled with diet so easily. This book repeats many of the same old harmful diet myths that have led to so many of us gaining weight or even becoming ill.

This book recommends taking 1 - 1.5 grams of calcium a day, an amount that several genuine nutrition experts have referred to as 'madness.' At most only a paltry 320 mg of magnesium is recommended to be taken with all this calcium, despite the fact that these two minerals must always be taken in balance with each other. To omit such a basic fact says a lot about the credibility of this book. In several parts of the book these stupidly high recommendations for calcium are given and magnesium isn't mentioned at all. This is dangerous! Many of us are low in magnesium and taking high calcium lowers magnesium further. Taking high levels of calcium can increase risk for cardiac problems and calcification of the body including the heart. See books on magnesium by Dr Carolyn Dean and others for more information on this.

Vitamin E is recommended in a dose of 1000 - 2000 IU but nowhere is it even mentioned that it is vital to take all 8 forms of vitamin E and not just alpha tocopherol. Taking this high a dose of one type of E is not a good idea.

Drugs are recommended for IBS patients in order to stop diarrhea. But very often the reason there are loose stools is because the body is trying to get something harmful out of its system quickly - as happens in celiac disease when wheat is eaten. So this is terrible advice and could cause real harm.

The elimination diet foods list in this book is also one of the worst I have ever seen, it is just full of foods likely to be poorly tolerated. The section on detoxification is also dismal.

Mostly this book just recommends and talks about lots of drugs and then recommends small amounts of nutrients to be taken with them. The same amount you might get in any multivitamin, or less than that, very often. There is no insight or depth of research whatsoever.

There are so many wonderful books out there on the topic of nutrition and vitamins and minerals. They deserve to be widely read.

If you want real information on nutrition or supplements get a book by a real expert in this field. Someone that has done more than a few hours of reading on the topic and has years of experience. Look for potentially-life-changing books by Nora Gedgaudes, Dr Sherry Rogers, Dr Abram Hoffer, Dr Thomas Levy and others and ignore this poor quality if well-meaning book.

Great Resource!

This book is a great resource. I have used it many times and recommended it to
friends and colleagues. I like that it provides information on a wide range of
medical conditions with both mainstream and natural medicine options. So many other
books are biased in one direction. I work in the health care field and appreciate
that this book provides credible information and guidelines. Unlike books that
promote wild miracle cures, crazy fad diets, and unfounded alternative treatments
this book provides readers with recommendations based on science rather than hype.

The Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870 when Bismarck engineered a war with the French Second Empire under Napoleon III. This was part of his wider political strategy of uniting Prussia with the southern German states, excluding Austria. In the peace settlement with the French Third Republic in 1871 Germany gained the eastern French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, areas that were to provide a bone of contention for years to come.

About the Author
Dr Stephen Badsey is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He is a specialist on the history of military ideas and the role of the media in warfare. He has written and published widely on military subjects ranging from the Crimean War to modern peacekeeping and the future of warfare. He has made frequent contributions as a historian for television and other media, and for numerous tours of battlefields including those of the Franco-Prussian War.

Franco-Prussian War

The author writes, "The Franco-Prussian War was the largest and most important war fought in Europe between the age of Napoleon and the First World War." This volume is a good summary of the background to the war, its main battles, and its consequences. The war actually had three phases: in the first, the Prussian Army defeated the French Imperial Army of Napoleon III - this was when most of the heaviest fighting occurred; in the second phase, the French Republican Army attempted to continue the fight after the abdication of Napoleon III and the establishment of the Third Republic; in the final phase, the French Army fought and defeated an attempted revolution in the form of the Paris Commune, while the Prussian Army stood by and waited for a victor to emerge so they had someone with which to work out the details of the armistice.

The book is brief, less than a hundred pages, but gives a clear picture of the course of the war, and is illustrated with battle maps, paintings, prints, and lithographs of the time. It is a great introduction for someone interested in studying this important and often-neglected war. One important result of the war which makes it worthy of study is that the Prussian victory, its heavy-handed armistice terms, and its acquisition of the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, led simultaneously to the decline of French power on the continent as Prussian power and prestige grew with the establishment of the German Empire, and caused an enduring hatred and bitterness in France which directly led to the series of events culminating in the First World War.

Chapters are dedicated to: the cultural, political, and military conditions in France and Germany (which included Prussia and the North German Confederation, Bavaria, Baden, and Wurtemberg) prior to the outbreak of the war; the immediate cause for the declaration of war; the major military maneuvers in the war; individual French and German perspectives on the conduct of the war; the end of the war; and the results of the war.

The Cliff Notes of military history

The "Essential Histories" series from Osprey could easily be compared to the Cliff Notes series. They'll give you a nice introduction to a topic you are not familiar with, but no real depth. Most volumns are under 100 pages; therefore, don't expect many "man in the trenches" stories.

This book is a nice introduction to a relatively small war that would have very much to do with the animosities of the two later World Wars. Grab this before you start your studies of the Great War.

About the Author
Teaches research methods, statistics, and organizational behavior in the masters and doctoral programs of public administration and business. Cooper's Ph.D. is from Kent State University. In addition to grants, articles, books, and monographs, he has received several teaching awards, most recently from the College of Architecture, Urban & Public Affairs. Dr. Cooper serves as the managing director of the Cooper Research Group, a consultancy specializing in customer satisfaction, loyalty, defection, and market segmentation research for the electronics and computer industries. Currently, he provides senior management of domestic and global firms with brand, segmentation, and service analysis. Prior to his academic career, Cooper was responsible for executive recruitment at a Fortune 500 and was an U.S. Air Force Captain during four years of active duty.

Professor of Management at Wittenberg University, is an educator and businesswoman. A winner of the prestigious Leavey Foundation Award in Free Enterprise Education, Schindler specializes in teaching marketing management, creative advertising, and supervising students on applied management projects. Serving as Director of Wittenberg's Center for Applied Management, she coordinates the Small Business Institute (SBI) program, winner of the 1996 National Showcase Award for innovation and excellence, as well as the Project Management Assistance program, in which she has guided more than 300 students doing experiential research and strategic projects for businesses, not-for-profits, and government agencies. A management and marketing consultant, Schindler also holds operating responsibilities in her family's property management business.

Great Text Book...WAY OVER PRICED!

The text is awesome, great content and very well put together. If my college class didn't require it, I would have never purchased it. The price tag is $266 for paperback...wow! How do they expect college students to be able to afford this?

Die durch die hohen Treibstoffpreise von heute auf morgen leer gefegten Autobahnen verdeutlichten sehr drastisch, dass ohne eine effizientere Nutzung selbiger Rohstoffe, zukünftige Generationen wohl einen Großteil ihrer individuellen Mobilität, aber vor allem auch ihres individuellen Wohlstands einbüßen würden. Und diese Erkenntnis beschränkte sich nicht nur auf das Öl und der damit verbundenen Mobilität. Umweltschützer und -aktivisten quasi die Grünen der ersten Stunde wurden vor diesen Ereignissen bezüglich ihrer Ideen, die vorhandenen Ressourcen sparsam zu verwenden, Recycling zu betreiben und generell Energie aus anderen Rohstoffen, denn aus Öl zu beziehen (und auch nicht aus der Atomenergie ), sprich mit den vorhandenen Mitteln nachhaltig umzugehen, bis dahin im besten Fall mit einem Lächeln belohnt. Dies änderte sich ab diesem Zeitpunkt drastisch. Ihre Vorschläge fanden in der Bevölkerung immer mehr Anklang und verloren auch den Charakter der Idee des linken Aktivisten . Es war chic geworden grün zu denken, nachhaltig zu denken, an die Bedürfnisse der zukünftigen Generationen zu denken.[...] Und schließlich entdeckten auch die Unternehmer und Wirtschaftstreibenden nachhaltiges Denken für sich und ihre Unternehmen. Ohne dabei einigen Individualisten und Idealisten der Gilde der Unternehmer ihre Vorreiterrolle streitig machen, oder gar ihren guten Willen in Frage stellen zu wollen, erkannte man, dass damit wirtschaftlich gesehen auf mehreren Ebenen Geld entweder einzusparen oder zu verdienen war. Beispielsweise wurde einerseits die Neuanschaffung ökonomisch und ökologisch sparsamer arbeitender Maschinen seitens der Regierungen finanziell unterstützt und etwa durch günstige Kredite verstärkt schmackhaft gemacht.

About the Author
Roza El-Eini was an undergraduate at University College and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, gaining a B.Sc. (Hons); and has an M.Litt. from the Faculty of Modern History, Middle East Centre, St Anthony's College, Oxford University; and a PhD. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her PhD. was awarded First Prize in a National competition in Israel for the year 2000 by the Dr Aharon and Advocate Josef Ben-Shamesh Fund. Dr El-Eini is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

A nice study

This is a compact and important study of all the aspects of landscape during the Palestine Mandate(1917-1948). It covers agriculture, Land laws, forestry, the land system, the partition plans and there is a special case study of the Shephalah, the Palestine Piedmont area on the Coastal plain. An important contribution to the field of study of Palestine in the 20th century, an excellent and interesting view of the Mandate, one that seperates politics from reality, a welcomed addition therefore to reading on Palestine and the land that became Israel.
