About the Author
Ann Cleeves is the author behind ITV's VERA and BBC One's SHETLAND. She has written over twenty-five novels, and is the creator of detectives Vera Stanhope and Jimmy Perez -- characters loved both on screen and in print. Her books have now sold over 1 million copies worldwide. Ann worked as a probation officer, bird observatory cook and auxiliary coastguard before she started writing. She is a member of 'Murder Squad', working with other British northern writers to promote crime fiction. In 2006 Ann was awarded the Duncan Lawrie Dagger (CWA Gold Dagger) for Best Crime Novel, for Raven Black, the first book in her Shetland series. Ann Cleeves does it again!

In the North Pennines on Black Law Farm is an isolated cottage, Baikie's Cottage. Businessmen want to open a quarry nearby, and three young women are using Baikie's as a base for the environmental study they must conduct. When Rachael, the team leader, arrives at Baikie's, she discovers the body of her friend, Black Law Farm owner Bella Furness. Apparently Bella has committed suicide, and Rachael finds that impossible to accept. And when the next death occurs, a fourth woman arrives at Baikie's Cottage: Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope.

Sometimes a writer branches out into different series with varying degrees of success. Ann Cleeves is one of those writers whose books I enjoy regardless of the series of which they're a part. Cleeves' Shetland Quartet is how I first became acquainted with her talent, and once I discovered that she'd written other series, I had to try those as well.

The Crow Trap starts out at a very deliberate pace. All three young women are introduced and their back stories are given while the plot advances. The area around Baikie's Cottage feels closed off, overcast and claustrophobic, as do the young women themselves. The atmosphere itself is rank with secrecy. It's not until page 230 of The Crow Trap that Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope makes her formal appearance:

"She was a large woman-- big bones amply covered, a bulbous nose, man-sized feet. Her legs were bare and she wore leather sandals. Her square toes were covered in mud. Her face was blotched and pitted so Rachael thought she must suffer from some skin complaint or allergy. Over her clothes she wore a transparent mac and she stood there, the rain dripping from it onto the floor, grey hair sleeked dark to her forehead, like a middle-aged tripper caught in a sudden storm on Blackpool prom."

Not your usual inspector, is our Vera. Her mother died while Vera was still quite young, and she grew up with her bird-obsessed father, living with him until his death. Vera still lives in the family home close to the railway. From her many treks across the moors with her father in search of birds and other wildlife, Vera has learned the value of patience, of standing still and quiet, of observing, of listening. These skills are all put to good use during an investigation in which everyone has something they want to remain hidden.

I was in the perfect mood for this book. I wanted something with atmosphere and detail, something that unfolded slowly and steadily, something that had marvelous characterizations. Once again, Cleeves has exceeded my expectations, since I not only read a marvelous book but gained a new inspector to follow.

If you're in the mood for English mysteries with plenty of plot and personality, it would be difficult to find an author better at delivering the goods than Ann Cleeves.

Impressive Shetland Mystery

Author Ann Cleeves has created a completely original and engaging character with police detective Vera Stanhope. (For those familiar with the late RD Wingfield's wonderful police series, she is a female version of Det. Insp. Jack Frost!) Vera is loud, uncouth, and overweight. She is also keenly intelligent, shoots from the hip and does not suffer fools gladly. While Vera doesn't make her entrance until nearly midway through the story, there is enough psychological drama and tension to keep the most critical reader hooked. The characters are well-drawn and intriguing, and Cleeves does a remarkable job of providing insight into each of them, all the while maintaining suspense and mystery. I've read all the Vera books and have been impressed with each one. I only hope Ms. Cleeves will pen another sometime soon!

John B. Jackson, was a writer, publisher, instructor, and sketch artist in landscape design who was influential in broadening the perspective on the "vernacular" landscape. Jackson was the publisher and editor of 'Landscape' Magazine from 1951 to 1968.

At first, Jackson argued, quite literally, for a lofty - an airborne - view of the world, reveling in the below-from-above perspective of aerial photographs. But Jackson's work, which dominated the first five issues of the magazine, was grounded in what he would later call the vernacular: an interest in the commonplace or everyday landscape, and Jackson expressed an innate confidence in the ability of people of small means to make significant changes, by no means all bad, in their surroundings. In an opening essay The Need of Being Versed in Country Things Jackson states that "It is from the air that the true relationship between the natural and the human landscape is first clearly revealed. The peaks and canyons lose much of their impressiveness when seen from above. What catches our eye and arouses our interest is not the sandy washes and the naked rocks, but the evidences of man." His writings allowed him to raise questions and present controversial statements especially in reference to humans and their role in shaping the landscape. Jackson's works have been published in seven other books along with A Sense of Place, a Sense of Time which won the 1995 PEN prize for essays.

How can people have missed the point of JB Jackson? JB Jackson is one of the finest geographers of the past fifty years. He taught at Harvard and Berkeley and wrote numerous essays, papers, and books. He had a profound influence on the way many geographers think about landscape -- a concept which has drifted back into mainstream of the way scholars in several disciplines think about the land and the people who live there. I personally can't imagine a better author to read to begin understanding what it is that we are seeing, walking and driving through, and having impressed on our brains as what it is that constitutes the familiar and the unfamiliar. As Amazon notes -- more than 100 books have cited this book as a source. That's a pretty good sign that this one is worth reading. And comprehending.

Meditations upon the meaning of 'landscape'

I was attracted by the title of this book; there's so much to be learned by observing the suburban or rural landscape, which most of us drive through without really noticing or reflecting upon it. Someday a wonderful book will be written on this topic, but this is not it. Instead, John Jackson presents us with a series of 'musings,' for lack of a better word, about the vernacular landscape. At times, the writing takes on a stream-of-consciousness quality that leans too heavily toward personal reflection. Topics include the grid-road network of the US midwest, placement of county courthouses within town plans, the history of the 'box house,' evolution of the Arts & Crafts style of architecture, and the author's experiences in the US Army in Europe during WWII. Intertwined among these topics are passages in which the author reflects upon the notion of 'landscape' and what it means to him.

About the Author
Richard Buckley is a much-traveled English writer of both prose and poetry. He has lived in New York, Paris, and London, but his present home is in Cheltenham, England, where he has lived for the past thirty years, bringing up two sons with his wife (and muse) Elfie. His books for children include The Dutiful Penguin, The Foolish Tortoise (with Eric Carle), The Greedy Python (with Eric Carle), and The Bird Who Couldn’t Fly (with Alex Williams).

Eric Carle is an internationally bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator of more than seventy books for very young children including his most well-known title The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Born in Syracuse, New York, Eric Carle moved to Germany with his parents when he was six years old. He studied at the prestigious art school, the Akademie der bildenden Künste, in Stuttgart before returning to the United States, where he worked as a graphic designer for The New York Times and later as art director for an international advertising agency. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, now considered a modern classic, has sold more than 41 million copies and has been translated into sixty-two languages. With his late wife, Barbara, Eric Carle cofounded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts in 2002. Eric Carle divides his time between the Florida Keys and the hills of North Carolina.

A tortise learns the meaning of "There is no place like home"

This cute story is about a tortoise that decides one day that he is tired of being slow. He takes off his shell, and starts off. Soon he discovers that he misses his shell for all the things it provided him: shelter, shade, and safety. He realizes too that he will never be fast, and when he finally finds his shell again, he gladly climbs back inside.

This story is told wonderfully, and in rhyme as well. The words flow well, and are fun to read out loud. The illustrations are Eric Carle's customary well-done collages. The cute story well told and with such fun illustrations makes for a great book.

A lovely story, fun to read, great illustrations

I was so happy to find this book, as I love Eric Carle's illustrations but don't care for his writing in most cases. Thank goodness for Richard Buckley and his entertaining story about the foolish tortoise. The rhyming text is great for the ears, and the images are beautiful.

Another thing I like about this book is that it is meatier than most board books-- i.e., more pages and more text on each 2-page spread. Therefore, it will be a story that I read to my son for a few years to come.

This was very enjoyable

The Foolish Tortoise was a very good book, I love Eric Carle's work. The pictures were marvelous. I won't give away the ending but he leaves his shell to travel to places he could never go before, but he's still not as fast as a horse, so he gets kind of depressed. He also finds trouble and he can't hide in his shell, so he find shelter behind rocks and tree, etc. He gets cold and has no heat. He walks around looking for his shell, does he find it? Get the book to find out.
