I want a Maddox man too

Loved the 1st book so much I had to get the boxed set right away. Full of steamy scenes that made a person squirm the whole time wanting to know what would happen next. The scenes were very hot without the BDSM parts making me uncomfortable. Characters were flawed and lovable with wonderful descriptions of their personalities and inner thoughts. Very alpha males with a loveable side and females who are vulnerable but strong at the same time. Each character has a very different personality and you will fall in love with each one. Sure the way these women find themselves at the mercy of each of the men in the Maddox family is far fetched, but this is fantasy right.

I've been a huge fan of Maya Angelou for decades now. I have had the great honor of having seen Maya Angelou speak twice before a live audience... She was a phenomenal speaker!!

I recently read the hardback edition of Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou. This book captured my interested due to the unique relationship between mothers and daughters and also because, I wanted to learn more about the relationship Maya Angelou had with her mother.

I thought Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou was overall a good read and would recommend this book to others. My only major complaint is that many of the life events that Maya Angelou discusses in this particular book have also been discussed in her other books. So, I only learned a few new things about her life that I didn't know before, which was disappointing to me as I wasn't expecting so much of Mom & Me & Mom to be a rehash of what I'd already read in her other books.

All mothers deserve a thank you

Expected a lot more from Ms. Angelou, but this is not "I Know Why a Caged Bird Sings." If you've read any of her other books, in "Mom" you'll come across similar passages. It's a simple tribute to her mother, written in simple declarative sentences. I got the feeling she wrote it because she felt she owed her mother a 'thank you.' All mothers deserve a thank you. It's clear that her mother's love and support enabled Ms. Angelou to share her talents with the world.

Not quite what I expected.

This is my first book by Maya Angelou. It was a quick read (one afternoon in about 3 hours) and I enjoyed the story of her relationship with her mother. Angelou's mother is a very colorful character and is what makes this book so interesting. I have only really ever just heard about Maya Angelou and it was very interesting to me to read about her life which was very different than what I thought it was. The only problem I had with the book was that I felt there were large gaps in the story- she seemed to just jump from one thing to another and I would have to re-read to figure out if she was changing subjects, or jumping to another moment in time, or what. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. I think I was expecting something a little more in depth. However, it was an enjoyable read. I will now look to read her "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" because I've been reading about how much better it is than this. Linda Muse

*Starred Review* "The front of her dress was a sudden welter of blood. Her eyes opened and shut, opened and stayed open." That sentence, from Raymond Chandler's 1935 story "Spanish Blood," says volumes about the history of mystery fiction. Death was mostly an offstage plot device in the works of Agatha Christie and other English authors during the so-called Golden Age of the detective story; American pulp writers made guns and blood their stock-in-trade, but most of them knew little about style, and their work didn't circulate much beyond bus stations and drugstores. Then Chandler, getting his start in those same pulps, began using phrases such as "sudden welter of blood," and it was only a matter of time before the literary world took notice. This landmark collection, gargantuan in both size and significance, brings together for the first time all of Chandler's short fiction, the raw material from which he later fashioned all his celebrated novels, from The Big Sleep through The Long Goodbye. Part of the fascination in reading these seminal tales is to encounter bits and pieces of the novels turning up in all sorts of places: the fabled opening scene of The Big Sleep, Marlowe with General Sternwood in the greenhouse, takes place in one story, while the later scene involving Sternwood's thumb-sucking daughter, Carmen, and her adventures with a pornographer becomes the centerpiece in an entirely different story. To read these 25 stories, 22 of which were originally published in the 1930s, consecutively is to watch Chandler's craft develop: the move from third to first person; the fascination with atmosphere and mood; the outrageous similes; the liberating focus on his detective's thoughts and feelings; and, of course, the relish with which he describes violence and death, utterly realistic yet flamboyantly stylized. And, yet, one can also see Chandler chomping at the bit of the short form, the plot demands of the mystery formula keeping him from his real interests: character and place. The real deal.

I was dubious. Not of the quality of Chandler's writings, but of the veracity of this book's claim to collect ALL of his short fiction. But it does. From Blackmailers Don't Shoot to The Pencil, with everything in between, this has them all. This also includes three that are available nowhere else: Professor Bingo's Snuff, The Bronze Door and English Summer. These last three really do not really qualify as pulpy mysteries (or even as typical Chandler, although his imprint in them is still distinct), but I had been seeking them for a while and bought the book for them alone anyway. And because, well, Chandler could write a grocery list and I'd buy it to read. He's that good.
For those who already know Chandler, that will not come as any surprise. He took up the torch which Hammett lit, toward making detective fiction respectable literature. And no one outside of Hemingway has been more influential or distinctive, in any style, anywhere, ever. And no one has ever been more entertaining. Chandler wrote in an extremely visceral, visual, atmospheric way, and made the language sit up, salute and perform pirouettes. His cynical California Gothic prose defined postwar America and combined intelligentsia with slang and squalor with romanticism into a new form that has not been exceeded. I could ramble on indefinitely, but I hope this paragraph has been some small yet clear indication of the fact that I happen to like Raymond Chandler's writing.
The three previously unpublished stories were treats, to see Chandler working in ways I was unaccustomed to. One was even subtitled 'A Gothic Romance'; that made me a little nervous, but is only a romance in the sense that The Big Sleep is a romance. All three deal with murder- one at a quaint but decaying English manor, one via a magical door to nowhere, and one by an invisible man. You read that last part correctly. Chandler delves into fantasy in these pages; and I was delighted. But for those of you passionately inclined to LA noir, don't worry: as unconventional as these stories are, they still retain most of the basic elements found in his other crime stories.
In Chandler's first Black Mask story, Blackmailers Don't Shoot, his style was present, but it was somewhat forced and imitative; he wore the attitude like a coat, keeping it a separate and distant thing. By just a couple of stories later, the attitude had become a second skin. Chandler had cemented his voice and begun to truly inhabit the world of his creations. Thereby we too are liberated, and transported, into his rich, dark, slinky and dangerous territory. By the late 30's everything was in place: atmosphere, language, attitude, et al. Raymond Chandler was combining (cannibalizing, he called it) two of the stories in this volume with new material to become his first and most famous novel, The Big Sleep. And we can all be thankful for that.
But it begins here. Some of these stories don't use the ingenious metaphors he later became renowned for, some are overly confusing, some aren't even great mysteries. (Chandler himself would tell you he was not the best plotter, giving that acclaim to Woolrich, but plots were secondary to Chandler anyway.) Still, these are all great stories, of the coolest era in history and of the last great rugged individualist. In some stories he is called Dalmas. In some Carmady. In some he is no one in particular. And yet they are all his lasting creation Marlowe under the surface, all *Chandler* himself in fact, using the crime story form to express his own philosophies of life. While never failing to blow your socks off with his skill.
For those who don't know Chandler this may not be the place to start. For that I recommend Farewell, My Lovely or The Little Sister, both among Chandler's most atmospheric and funny novels. But I do recommend starting down these mean streets which Marlowe himself prowled. You will (or should) become hooked, and may eventually wind up back at this collection anyway, where you can see the writer- and his characters- develop, and see grains of the novels his stories would become.
If you have never read Chandler before, you have a vast world newly open to you. Lucky you.
If you have read him before, welcome back. Curl up and stay awhile.
P.S. The introduction to this volume breaks no new ground. Don't get me wrong, it's OK. But this is An Historic Publishing Event, so I was expecting something a little more official and substantive. A small gripe.

Addendum for completists (like me)...

Strictly speaking, there is one short story of Raymond Chandler's that this volume does not include: A Couple of Writers.
But it is not a *crime* story, may have had a few autobiographical elements, and went unpublished for a long time. So this book's claim could, I suppose, still be seen as valid.
If you're curious about this last story (it is a straight dramatic piece about a novelist and a playwrite, and their marriage on the rocks), you may find it in the otherwise thoroughly unnecessary book entitled Raymond Chandler Speaking.

I was moved to tears.

This book is a well written, and moving account of the final week of Jesus. You feel as though you are walking along with Him during that time. You can feel the pain, rejection, and triumph of the crucifixion and resurrection. This is a life changing book. I was literally moved to tears the first time that I read this book.

Old book, timeless story

I first read "The First Easter", by Peter Marshall, over 25 years ago. It now is a permanent part of my "favorite books" shelf, and I buy used copies quite often to give as gifts to family, friends, and church libraries. Soon after starting the book, I was caught up in the lives and times of Jesus and His Disciples, and felt as though I was a bystander as the final week of Jesus' life before His crucifixion played out in front of my eyes. When Mary cried at the tomb, I cried with her, and when she saw Jesus, her joy was so real, that I felt like I was right there with her, seeing Him and believing that He was raised from the dead, just as He had promised. Easy reading, can be completed in a few hours, but leaves a lasting feeling of having been there.

Every preacher and Christian speaker should read this. Great senses, smells, images, feelings, challenges. The format makes for easy reading and using for any speech. Read this decades ago and now I buy copies to give away as a part of my book giving ministry.

Teacher, musician and creator of Teaching English Games and Home English Teacher.

Shelley noticed that children learning English in primary schools managed to go through years of lessons and retain virtually nothing, aside from "my name is ..." and colours. She was determined to get better results for her pupils. Instead of being faced with a class of children who forget the unit no sooner the page is turned, she chose to teach using games, and focus the bulk of class time on the listening and speaking skills, with hundreds of language drills, disguised in fun formats.

She created a collection of games from her experiences to share with other teachers. She has since shared her ideas with thousands of teachers around the world, bringing enthusiasm and a love of learning into the classroom, as well as great results.

Shelley Vernon holds a BA degree in languages from Durham University, 1989, a BA in music from Canterbury Christchurch College, 2000 and a TEFL qualification.

Worth it for the Price

I bought this because I have another teaching game book of Shelley Vernon that is geared towards adult learners. However, I thought it might be nice to have a digital copy of a game book with some games that were appropriate for my younger students. I just recently started to load up my tablet with things that I can use in my classroom. I like having this book with me at work because I can use it when I am writing my lesson plans. Each game has the category, materials needed, target English level of the students, and the group size that it can be used with so it is easy to find one to use. Another perk to having this on my tablet at work is that when we finish a lesson early I can quickly find a game for us to play in the last few minutes. I have gone through and highlighted some of the ones that do not require any materials and don't take a long time to play.

The last thing that I like about it is something that I didn't like about other books. Some game books have only games that everyone already knows like Hangman. This book had a lot of games that I never had before or variations that I never thought of... So that was nice. I wish that I had had this book when I used to be a substitute teacher. Sometimes the teacher did not leave a lesson plan or there was extra time at the end of the class. If I had this, I would have been a more popular sub!

This is one of the better books of games for language arts/ESL and EFL classrooms on the market today. Many of the games require the teacher to either have or to make flashcards, but I heartily recommend this book because there are games ideas that do not require flashcards. There is also a lot of good advice by the author on how to utilize these games in your classroom.

As the title suggests, this book is a collection of circuits. The circuits are all well-designed and functional although they do seem chosen at random. The technology is old (very old, I have seen versions of these from the 1940s) but it does work - mostly. This book is probably pitched at the self-taught private detective who is not too fussy about the local eavesdropping laws. This is definitely not what your country's internal securty force is using!

Despite the title there is nothing in this book that you could not find in any good text on electronics design or acoustic engineering; indeed that's what the professionals would be using. But for students who are bright but directionless "design a bug for the principal's office" is always a better motivator than "read chapter six and attempt the odd-numbered questions". For security professionals it defines the lower end of the threat spectrum - not what government agencies are using.

Circuit schematics are provided along with a theoretical description and some practical tips.

The book presents the circuits in six sections:
In the section on surveillance, the circuits include a simple subcarrier generator for an FM bug, a hookswitch bypass for older style (non-electronic) phones and some very old (but useful) techniques for hardwire and telephone taps. Some voice activation circuits and high gain amplifiers are also mentioned.
The section on remote control offers some very simple but useful techniques turning common consumer electronics into remote controlled devices.
The section of infra-red flashers provides variations on the same circuit - a blinking IRED which can be tracked at night with an infrared scope or a video camera.
The section on counter surveillance provides some well-known techniques for tracing radio bugs, phone taps and hardwire taps.
The section on receiver enhancements provides some simple techniques to receive subcarrier or carrier current transmissions on an HF communications receiver.
There is a section mostly dealing with circuits that record unauthorised entries or phone use.

Most circuits are old, but well-proven technology. A few would be dangerous enough in North America with their 110 volt mains, but they are guaranteed lethal in the remainder of the world where 220, 230 or 240 volts is more common, or where 415 volt three-phase systems are in use.

The Parts Source section is only of use to readers in North America

A word of caution here. Most governments have made illegal the construction, possession, distribution (by sale or otherwise), use or use of material obtained from eavesdropping devices except in special circumstances so you are advised to check your local laws if you want to do more than read this book.

On the other hand, successful prosecutions are rare and similar devices are openly advertised for sale. Detection of these devices is difficult. Any competent hobbyist could produce this equipment from readily available components or by disassembly of consumer items.

But before you go into business consider this advice. Whether your clients are cops, spies or gangsters, they are eavesdroppers and conspirators - they are inherently untrustworthy. They don't regard you as an electronic genius - you're just the hired help, some geek who is useful but expendable. Look after number one! The smartest player is often the one who does not join the game.

I found some very interesting and overlooked circuits here!

A friend of mine and I were very impressed with his simple Subcarrier Converter for transmitters and his SCA decoder using a very common, mid-price range communications receiver. We have never seen such an unusual and highly effective technique for preventing the casual listener from over-hearing covert intercepts. Some of the other books like Basement Buggers Bible (though really great and with much more detailed plans), for some reason, did not have some of these more sophisticated modulation schemes. His simple Carrier Current By-pass technique really worked well on a recent case. We found the Capacitors that he recomended for the By-pass at a Ham Fest (they were a little hard to find though)...

Bench-Tested Circuits : For Surveillance and Countersurveill

My buddy and me used some of the circuits from this book and his second Bench Tested Circuits book and were able to fool a high priced Counter Measures team with a big van loaded with CM equipment. We were in some god forsaken town that only had a Radio Shack and a Hardware store. The circuits are simple but work just as well as the more high priced circuits that we have seen. Many of this guy's simple techniques are almost impossible to detect. Our client was very happy when he listened to the chatter from the CM people.
